Introducing the sounds & shuffles that go to make up ‘Old Timey’ fiddle style.

A2 - Matt Cranitch - Introduction to Irish Fiddle Music
Learn about the basic rhythms and bowing of Irish music.

A3 - Sam Sweeney - English Fiddle Band
Ensemble playing & creating harmonies by ear - suitable for viola, cello & double bass as well as fiddles.

Saturday Afternoon

B1 - Pete Cooper - Old Time String Band
Putting together the harmonies & rhythms of an American string band. Bring along viola, cello, double bass and mandolin as well as fiddles.

B2 - Matt Cranitch - Developing your Irish Style
Repertoire, ornamentation and bowing - or players with some experience playing Irish music.

B3 - Sam Sweeney - Style & Repertoire for English Music
Using bow & fiddle to create your own English fiddle sound.

C1 - Pete Cooper - East European Fiddle Band
Tunes from Eastern Europe & the Balkans, for violin, viola, cello, double bass.

C2 - Matt Cranitch - The Music of Padraig O’Keeffe
The music and life of one of the great masters of the fiddle music of Sliabh Luachra.

C3 - Sian Phillips - A Dummy's Guide to Chords on the Fiddle
What are they? Why play them and when, how and where do I put my fingers?
Fiddle chord accompaniment demystified - a theoretical and practical workshop for players who want to learn or have questions to ask about what on earth the guitarists are playing!

PETE COOPER is as always the last word in fiddle teaching. He has toured, collected and taught fiddle music for most of his life, covering many traditions from America, Continental Europe, and all parts of Britain including Ireland. He has performed solo and with many artists including Peta Webb, Holly Tannen, The Mellstock Band and Rattle on the Stovepipe. MATT CRANITCH is renowned at home in Ireland and abroad as an Irish traditional fiddle-player, teacher, lecturer and author. He has performed extensively with various groups at concerts and festivals, as well as on radio and television, and has made a number of highly-acclaimed recordings, memorably with Na Fili and Jackie Daly. He has also presented many lectures, master-classes and workshops on various aspects of Irish traditional music, especially the music of Sliabh Luachra and fiddle master Padraig O’Keeffe.

SIAN PHILLIPS is a fifth-generation fiddle player with roots back to the chapel fiddlers of the Swansea Valleys. She’s an ABRSM registered teacher with over 25 years’ experience teaching, workshops, performance and session work. She is a major force in the current revival of Welsh fiddle music, and has produced a book of Welsh Fiddle Tunes for international publishers Schott.

SAM SWEENEY - Voted Musician of the Year at BBC Folk Awards 2015, Sam has one of the most impressive CVs on the folk scene, and is still in his twenties. He has been playing the fiddle since he was six and is now a highly respected multi-instrumentalist, most notably with Bellowhead. He is a key players in the current resurgence of English instrumental music and has recently been appointed the inaugural Artistic Director of the National Youth Folk Ensemble. Sam has also recorded and toured with Leveret, The Full English, Eliza Carthy, John Boden & the Remnant Kings, Fay Hield and The Hurricane Party, as well as creating and touring his critically acclaimed show Made in the Great War.
