Carols & songs from the old West Gallery choirs provided the music for many Oxfordshire parish churches in the 18th and 19th centuries, with vigorous rhythms, soaring counterpoint and strange harmonies.

The old gallery singers performed a repertoire including convivial and celebratory songs alongside carols and church music. We will sing songs for all seasons – weddings, maytime, fairs and feasts, as well as for Christmas and church celebrations. Most of the music comes from Oxfordshire sources, oral and written.

A knowledge of written music will be helpful, but singers will not be expected to be able to “sight-sing” and we’ll go through all the parts until everyone has learnt them, so don’t worry if you can’t read music or have never sung in a choir.

The choir meets at St. Mary & St. John Church, Cowley Road, OXFORD, OX4 1UR.

(The church is on the corner of Leopold Street, opposite Divinity Road. Bus No. 1 or 5 along Cowley Road and get off at Manzil Way.We also have permission to use the car park for Restore, just along Manzil Way.)
